SUMMARY:Evening Storytime with Julie Gerdes Becnel
DESCRIPTION:We’re heading to Parleaux Beer Lab for a cozy Evening Storytime! \n\n\n\nJoin us Friday\, September 11th at 6pm as local author Julie Gerdes Becnel shares her book\, Roux’s First Day with us. Settle in with a pint of Parleaux’s small-batch craft beer and a juice box for the little ones while enjoying a family-friendly reading. \n\n\n\nAfter storytime\, kids are invited to stick around for a fun craft activity inspired by the book. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs she braves her first day of school in the swamp\, Roux discovers that what makes us different is also what makes us shine. \n\n\n\nRoux has never felt so nervous. She’s about to begin “kinder-swamp-garten” and she will be the only rougarou in her class. As she walks to school beneath the towering cypress trees\, one by one\, fellow swamp creatures join in\, each one different from the next. With their help\, Roux’s jitters melt into joy\, and she discovers that what makes us different is also what makes us shine. Rooted in Louisiana’s rich folklore\, this gentle\, playful story introduces the legendary rougarou in a family-friendly way. Perfect for any little one getting ready for their own big first day\, Roux’s tale is a celebration of belonging\, courage\, and the magic of being yourself. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJulie Gerdes Becnel\n\n\n\nJulie has always been enchanted by the myths and folk tales that shape our collective imagination. Inspired by the folklore\, culture\, and natural beauty of her Louisiana home\, her storytelling has taken many forms\, including poetry\, short fiction\, and plays. When Julie isn’t crafting stories or helping clients through her creative consultancy\, Little Rouge Hen\, she can be found exploring the outdoors with her husband\, two children\, and her very own Lou-ga-rou. Her debut children’s book\, Roux’s First Day\, was released this year by Pelican Publishing.

Host\, Rayna Nielsen will talk with Annabelle and Raj about their previous books\, their upcoming projects and so much more. \n\n\n\n Watch the live stream on YouTube Thursday\, August 20th at 6pm central. \n\n\n\n\nTune In!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA timely self-examination of the “mixed” American experience featuring exclusive recipes and photographs from the author’s multicultural family. \n\n\n\nIn this contemporary coming-of-age tale\, Tawney tackles personal hot-button issues about race and identity through poignant\, heartfelt moments centered on delicious meals. From succulent tandoori chicken to delectable arroz con habichuelas to scrumptious spaghetti and meatballs\, Tawney shares his family recipes along with the intimate stories he overheard in the kitchen as he played sous chef to hundreds of recipes that not only span continents but also come with their own personal histories attached. Colorful Palate is a tale of the mixed experience\, one of the millions that rarely get told\, undefined by a single group or birthright and unapologetic about its lack of classification. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaj Tawney\n\n\n\nRaj Tawney is an author\, journalist\, and essayist whose work largely reflects his multiracial American upbringing. Born in New York to an Indian\, Puerto Rican\, and Italian American family\, Tawney has explored his identity and family history through personal essays published in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, USA Today\, San Francisco Chronicle\, and other outlets throughout the country. His debut memoir\, Colorful Palate: A Flavorful Journey Through a Mixed American Experience (Empire State Editions/Fordham University Press\, 2023)\, earned critical acclaim and won numerous awards. His Middle Grade novel\, All Mixed Up (Paw Prints Publishing/Baker & Taylor\, 2024)\, was a NYPL Best Book for Kids pick and a Día Reading List pick\, among other accolades. He currently resides in South Florida. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis “witty\, humorous\, and heartfelt” (Cinelle Barnes) memoir navigates the tangled branches of Annabelle Tometich’s life\, from growing up in Florida as the child of a Filipino mother and a deceased white father to her adult life as a med-school-reject-turned-food-critic. \n\n\n\nWith clear-eyed compassion and piercing honesty\, The Mango Tree is a family saga that navigates the tangled branches of Annabelle’s life\, from her childhood days in an overflowing house flooded by balikbayan boxes\, vegetation\, and juicy mangoes\, to her winding path from medical school hopeful to restaurant critic. It is a love letter to her fellow Filipino Americans\, her lost younger self\, and the beloved fruit tree at the heart of her family. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnnabelle Tometich\n\n\n\nAnnabelle Tometich went from medical-school flunky to line cook to journalist to author. She spent eighteen years as a food writer\, editor\, and restaurant critic for The News-Press in her hometown of Fort Myers\, Florida. Her writing has appeared in the Washington Post\, USA Today\, Catapult\, the Tampa Bay Times\, and many more publications. Tometich has won more than a dozen awards for her stories\, including first place for Features Writing from the Florida Society of News Editors in 2020. SUMMARY:Evening Storytime with Samantha Boudreaux
DESCRIPTION:We’re heading to Parleaux Beer Lab for a cozy Evening Storytime! \n\n\n\nJoin us on Friday\, June 12 at 6pm as local author Samantha Schott Boudreaux shares her new picture book\, Where’d You Go\, Kitty? with us. Settle in with a pint of Parleaux’s small-batch craft beer (or a juice box for the little ones) and enjoy a family-friendly reading. \n\n\n\nAfter storytime\, kids are invited to stick around for a fun craft activity inspired by the book. \n\n\n\nP.S. You can now pick up any order placed through our website free of charge at our pop-up events\, including this one. Just select “pickup” at checkout and we’ll have your books ready for you at the event. \n\n\n\n\nPurchase Where’s You Go\, Kitty?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSamantha Scott Boudreaux\n\n\n\nSamantha Schott Boudreaux grew up in Mandeville\, Louisiana. She discovered her passion for writing at St. Scholastica Academy (“SSA”)\, where a teacher once read her essay aloud to the class as an example of good writing. After SSA\, Sam studied journalism and was the editor of the campus newspaper at the University of Southern Mississippi. She then went to law school at the University of Alabama\, where she was the editor-in-chief of the Alabama Law Review. Now\, she lives in Metairie with her husband and daughter\, and she works for a New Orleans law firm\, channeling her storytelling skills into legal arguments. Thanks to her SSA writing teacher and other mentors along the way\, Sam realized she should make a career out of writing\, and that’s what she’s doing. “Where’d You Go\, Kitty?” is her first book. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Cecilia on a heartwarming New Orleans adventure to find her lost best friend\, Kitty! \n\n\n\nAfter Cecilia catches “Kitty” at a Mardi Gras parade\, the two become inseparable. Cecilia takes Kitty with her everywhere–City Park\, the mall\, Grandma’s house–until one day Cecilia wakes up and Kitty is gone. Teaming up with her parents\, Cecilia then retraces her steps\, looking high and low for her little best friend. \n\n\n\nBased on a true story\, this playful tale shows that the love in a kid’s heart can extend to the ends of the earth–or at least to the ends of the New Orleans metro area. Don’t miss your chance to join the search party and follow Cecilia to some of the city’s most iconic spots!
