SUMMARY:Presentation and Book Signing with Michael Tisserand and Alison Fensterstock
DESCRIPTION:Join Book Banter Books and the St. Tammany Art Association for a special event celebrating Bunny Matthews: His Life\, Art\, and Obsessions with authors Michael Tisserand and Alison Fensterstock. \n\n\n\nDiscover the world of Bunny Matthews\, the beloved New Orleans cartoonist best known for his sharp wit\, distinctive artistic style\, and unforgettable characters. Tisserand and Fensterstock will present a closer look at Matthews’ comic strips featuring the Northshore\, exploring the people\, places\, and local quirks that inspired his work and made his art such a memorable part of our cultural landscape. \n\n\n\nFollowing the presentation\, Michael Tisserand and Alison Fensterstock will sign copies of their book. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Bunny Matthews\, a lover of local history\, or simply curious about the art and characters that capture the spirit of a place\, this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate one of Louisiana’s distinctive creative voices. \n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with: St. Tammany Art Association \n\n\n\nThis event will take place at Art House \n\n\n\nCome for the stories\, stay for the art\, and leave with a deeper appreciation for Bunny Matthews and his unique vision of the Northshore. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMatthews is best known for his cartoon characters Vic and Nat’ly\, two irreverent bar owners from the Nint’ Ward who rank alongside Ignatius J. Reilly and Blanche DuBois in the pantheon of fictional New Orleanians. Although best known as a cartoonist\, Matthews was also a musician\, arts journalist\, and promoter who helped create the visual culture of the 1970s music scene in New Orleans through posters\, calendars\, and fliers for clubs like Tipitina’s and Jimmy’s. \n\n\n\nMatthews once wrote\, “Be witty. Be nasty. Be silly. Don’t be boring.” That ethos animates the pages of Bunny Matthews: His Life\, Art\, and Obsessions\, the first monograph of his work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlison Fensterstock\n\n\n\n\nAlison Fensterstock is a former music critic for the Times-Picayune and Gambit in New Orleans and a columnist for the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities’ quarterly 64 Parishes. Outside of New Orleans\, her writing has also appeared in Rolling Stone\, Pitchfork\, MOJO\, the Oxford American\, and other places. Her books include The Definition of Bounce and How Women Made Music: A Revolutionary History from NPR Music. She’s been a substitute DJ on WWOZ 90.7 FM since 2006. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael Tisserand\n\n\n\nMichael Tisserand\, a former editor of Gambit newspaper\, is the author of books including Krazy: George Herriman a Life in Black and White; The Kingdom of Zydeco; Sugarcane Academy; and My Father When Young. Tisserand’s work has also appeared in The New York Times\, the Oxford American\, The Nation\, and MSNBC. With support from a Guggenheim Fellowship\, he is currently working on a book about Charlie Chaplin and The Great Dictator\, forthcoming on Oxford University Press.

SUMMARY:ESU EVELYN WRENCH SPEAKER SERIES PRESENTS CLIVE ASLET
DESCRIPTION:We have partnered with the ESU of New Orleans for their Evelyn Wrench Speaker Series. Tickets are required for this event and can be purchased here. \n\n\n\nClive Aslet is the publisher of Triglyph Books\, the publishing house that he founded with photographer Dylan Thomas in 2019. His most recent book is King Charles III: 40 Years of Architecture\, published by Triglyph: a tribute to the King’s long-standing passion for architecture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKing Charles III’s affection for architecture is well-known\, but the extent of his engagement has never been fully presented to the public. This is the first book to draw together the many threads\, from the ‘carbuncle’ speech made at Hampton Court in 1984\, until his accession to the throne. He has created model settlements such as Poundbury through the Duchy of Cornwall\, Dumfries House in East Ayrshire has been made a beacon of social regeneration\, and his educational initiatives have changed lives. \n\n\n\nThe four decades of the King’s commitment to architecture have coincided with Clive Aslet’s career as a journalist\, during which he has followed the story and often written about it\, not least during the 13 years for which he was editor of Country Life. King Charles III: 40 Years of Architecture is based on new research including many interviews with the architects\, critics\, advisors and academics who worked with the (then) Prince of Wales on his far-reaching endeavours.

Her debut children’s book\, Roux’s First Day\, was released this year by Pelican Publishing.

Host\, Rayna Nielsen will talk with Annabelle and Raj about their previous books\, their upcoming projects and so much more. \n\n\n\n Watch the live stream on YouTube Thursday\, August 20th at 6pm central. \n\n\n\n\nTune In!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA timely self-examination of the “mixed” American experience featuring exclusive recipes and photographs from the author’s multicultural family. \n\n\n\nIn this contemporary coming-of-age tale\, Tawney tackles personal hot-button issues about race and identity through poignant\, heartfelt moments centered on delicious meals. From succulent tandoori chicken to delectable arroz con habichuelas to scrumptious spaghetti and meatballs\, Tawney shares his family recipes along with the intimate stories he overheard in the kitchen as he played sous chef to hundreds of recipes that not only span continents but also come with their own personal histories attached. Colorful Palate is a tale of the mixed experience\, one of the millions that rarely get told\, undefined by a single group or birthright and unapologetic about its lack of classification. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaj Tawney\n\n\n\nRaj Tawney is an author\, journalist\, and essayist whose work largely reflects his multiracial American upbringing. Born in New York to an Indian\, Puerto Rican\, and Italian American family\, Tawney has explored his identity and family history through personal essays published in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, USA Today\, San Francisco Chronicle\, and other outlets throughout the country. His debut memoir\, Colorful Palate: A Flavorful Journey Through a Mixed American Experience (Empire State Editions/Fordham University Press\, 2023)\, earned critical acclaim and won numerous awards. His Middle Grade novel\, All Mixed Up (Paw Prints Publishing/Baker & Taylor\, 2024)\, was a NYPL Best Book for Kids pick and a Día Reading List pick\, among other accolades. He currently resides in South Florida. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis “witty\, humorous\, and heartfelt” (Cinelle Barnes) memoir navigates the tangled branches of Annabelle Tometich’s life\, from growing up in Florida as the child of a Filipino mother and a deceased white father to her adult life as a med-school-reject-turned-food-critic. \n\n\n\nWith clear-eyed compassion and piercing honesty\, The Mango Tree is a family saga that navigates the tangled branches of Annabelle’s life\, from her childhood days in an overflowing house flooded by balikbayan boxes\, vegetation\, and juicy mangoes\, to her winding path from medical school hopeful to restaurant critic. It is a love letter to her fellow Filipino Americans\, her lost younger self\, and the beloved fruit tree at the heart of her family. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnnabelle Tometich\n\n\n\nAnnabelle Tometich went from medical-school flunky to line cook to journalist to author. She spent eighteen years as a food writer\, editor\, and restaurant critic for The News-Press in her hometown of Fort Myers\, Florida. Her writing has appeared in the Washington Post\, USA Today\, Catapult\, the Tampa Bay Times\, and many more publications. Tometich has won more than a dozen awards for her stories\, including first place for Features Writing from the Florida Society of News Editors in 2020.
