Evening Storytime with Julie Gerdes Becnel

We’re heading to Parleaux Beer Lab for a cozy Evening Storytime!
Join us Friday, September 11th at 6pm as local author Julie Gerdes Becnel shares her book, Roux’s First Day with us. Settle in with a pint of Parleaux’s small-batch craft beer and a juice box for the little ones while enjoying a family-friendly reading.
After storytime, kids are invited to stick around for a fun craft activity inspired by the book.
As she braves her first day of school in the swamp, Roux discovers that what makes us different is also what makes us shine.
Roux has never felt so nervous. She’s about to begin “kinder-swamp-garten” and she will be the only rougarou in her class. As she walks to school beneath the towering cypress trees, one by one, fellow swamp creatures join in, each one different from the next. With their help, Roux’s jitters melt into joy, and she discovers that what makes us different is also what makes us shine. Rooted in Louisiana’s rich folklore, this gentle, playful story introduces the legendary rougarou in a family-friendly way. Perfect for any little one getting ready for their own big first day, Roux’s tale is a celebration of belonging, courage, and the magic of being yourself.

Julie has always been enchanted by the myths and folk tales that shape our collective imagination. Inspired by the folklore, culture, and natural beauty of her Louisiana home, her storytelling has taken many forms, including poetry, short fiction, and plays. When Julie isn’t crafting stories or helping clients through her creative consultancy, Little Rouge Hen, she can be found exploring the outdoors with her husband, two children, and her very own Lou-ga-rou. Her debut children’s book, Roux’s First Day, was released this year by Pelican Publishing.
